Why a payment fell behind & how it was applied

Open the per-payment explainers — a breakdown of how each payment was applied, and why a payment left the loan behind.

Updated June 27, 2026

NoteHarbor explains every payment in plain English — both how it was split up, and (when a payment left the loan behind) exactly why.

"How was this applied?"

  1. Open a loan and go to the Payments tab.
  2. On any payment row, click the ? (help) icon.
  3. The How this payment was applied box breaks the payment into Escrow, Interest, Principal, Late & penalty charges, and Servicing fee, and shows the balance after.

"Why did this payment fall behind?"

On a delinquent loan, the payment that set things behind is flagged with an amber triangle. Click it to open Why this payment set the loan behind — the cause (for example a short payment, or one held in suspense) and how the money was distributed.

These explainers read the real payment record, so they always match the loan's actual history. See also Recording a payment and Delinquency tracking.
